SUMMARY:Coming Together to Tend Our Grief
DESCRIPTION:A Weekend Community Grief Ceremony in Twisp\, WA\n\n\n\nFriday\, Oct 9\, 7p – Sunday Oct 11th\, 12p \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAmidst our personal losses and the ecological and social catastrophes of our times\, we need spaces to grieve together\, in community. \n\n\n\nJoin a small group of other community members\, held by experienced Grief Ritual facilitators Marisa Withey Byrne and Alex Eisenberg from Port Townsend. Together\, we will make space for our individual and collective losses\, disappointments\, and fears. \n\n\n\nThrough talking circles\, singing\, movement\, and ritual space\, we will let our grief move through each of us\, watering the seeds of a community in which none of us need ever bear our sorrows alone. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Grieving is a soul cleansing way to reclaim and to recover our spirit. When we do not grieve\, we stay in an unhealthy place and lose who we are.” -Sobonfu Somé\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWho is hosting this event? We are a small circle of Methow Valley community members that have been gathering monthly since Fall 2023 as a “Kinship Circle\,” with the purpose of strengthening our intimacy with each other and with this place\, and supporting each other to bring this outward into our relations in wider circles. We are collaborating with Rites & Responsibilities\, a project of Nourishing Futures\, to offer this event. Our work together has been informed by many\, especially The Work That Reconnects\, The Emergence Network\, and Gesturing Towards Decolonial Futures.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nCOST: There is no set cost to participate. We estimate $6\,000 in total expenses for this event\, including meaningful financial support for the facilitators\, cost for the space\, and supplies. We’ll cover all costs with 20 participants contributing an average of $300. If some are able to give more financially\, it will help cover the costs of those who need to contribute less. When you register\, you’ll be asked to make a pledge\, and make an initial good-faith contribution. We will communicate with all registered participants about actual income and expenses for this offering. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWhether you’re able to attend or not\, we welcome your support for making experiences like this available and financially accessible for our community. Contributions can be made here (please indicate your contribution is to Rites & Responsibilities and designate“grief ceremony” in the memo line). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFAQ: If you have more questions\, please see our FAQ here. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTRATION: We have space for up to 25 participants. Registration opens soon. Join the waitlist to be notified when registration opens. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJOIN WAITLIST HERE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMeet Our Facilitators\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMarisa\, or “Sasa\,” Withey Byrne is a light bearer dedicated to healing the isolation and suffering of interpersonal violence– especially sexual trauma—to practice and sustain healthy and holistic relationship with self\, other\, and one’s place in the world. Her offerings reflect her experience as an advocate\, sex educator\, council carrier\, ceremonialist\, grief tender\, rite of passage facilitator\, and foster mama. Her Bolivian and Irish ancestry\, deep connection to Pachamama\, and belief in transformative justice shape how she shows up to her work and to the world. \n\n\n\nMarisa’s grief work began with decades of tears in solitude\, transforming while driving through song and wails\, similar to what she later learned was Keening. She believes her ancestors guided her to that ancient form. A few years later\, she studied with friends and community members\, including Kari Stettler\, Thérèse Charvet and Laurence Cole\, who themselves had been trained by grief work leaders Joanna Macy and Sobonfu Somé. Sasa has been facilitating grief spaces since 2018 online and in person\, including an online platform honoring lives lost in incarceration\, a community ritual for youth who have died too soon\, and grief rituals for survivors of sexual trauma.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen Alex Chana Eisenberg found communal grief tending rituals at the age of 24\, she stopped feeling crazy for her depth of emotion and started feeling empowered by it. After her first Dagara-style grief retreat\, Alex continued on with her apprenticeship to sorrow\, but also immediately began an apprenticeship to the work of grief tending and facilitation. \n\n\n\nThrough attending many grief rituals in the Dagara lineage; participating in several grief apprenticeship/training programs under the care\, guidance\, and tutelage of Laurence Cole and Thérèse Charvet; and co-facilitating grief rituals in her own community and beyond over the past 12 years\, Alex has cultivated her own style of grief tending while honing her sensitivities to the rhythms of grief and group energetics. She is always honored to show up in humble service to tending the raw and wild edges of human emotion\, with her deep care and presence\, and her ever-tender heart. \n\n\n\nIn service to this work\, Alex also manages a linktree ( linktr.ee/griefsupport ) where she tracks and promotes grief rituals from around the region and beyond. If you have a link to a grief event you want added\, you can email it to her at alexceberg(at)@yahoo.com. \n\n\n\n\nA few words on the lineage of this Grief Ritual (see audio recording below): Many grief rituals including this one are heavily influenced by the lineage of the Dagara people of Burkina Faso\, which was brought to our continent by Sobonfu and Malidoma Some several decades ago in response to destruction being wrought by “the west” due to our lack of connection\, lack of ritual\, and lack of grief tending. The ritual has necessarily\, and at the request of Sobonfu\, evolved in form and content\, to better suit the needs of our culture as it differs from the village. These changes also reflect the emergence and synergy that happens as those of us in the West\, individually and collectively\, begin to discover and embody our own authentic ways of grieving and grief tending\, bringing our own innate wisdoms\, our own lineages and traditions\, and as we traverse the unprecedented terrain of these times.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSiena at NW Grief Tending · Honoring the Dagara Grief Ritual Teaching Lineage\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“To honor our grief\, to grant it space and time in our frantic world\, is to fulfill a covenant with soul – to welcome all that is\, thereby granting room for our most authentic life.” – Francis Weller

SUMMARY:Re-Calling Our Ancestors Fall 2026 Monthlong
DESCRIPTION:October 15 – November 12\, 2026\, weekly Thursdays \n\n\n\n2 – 4pm Pacific Time (5-7pm Eastern\, 10pm-12am BST) \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin the Re-Calling Our Ancestors team this coming fall\, October 15th – November 12th\, 2026\, for a moon cycle of community exploration and ritual inquiry in ancestral recovery\, truth-telling\, and collective repair designed for white\, white-passing\, and white-proximate people committed to dismantling systems of oppression in ourselves and in the world around us\, as well as in our communities of practice and in the bodies of work we carry. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFollowing the waxing and waning of the moon\, we’ll gather via zoom on Thursdays at 2 – 4p Pacific Time (5-7pm Eastern\, 10p-12am British Summer Time) to explore the earth-cherishing traditions of our ancestors\, the harm our ancestors endured\, the harm our ancestors caused\, and the ways our ancestors resisted and persisted along the way. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“We approach our ancestors not as detectives gathering information but as descendants committed to relationship.”\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n– Shay Sloan Clarke\, Re-Calling Our Ancestors Core Guide \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThrough a series of online sessions\, home study and practice\, one-on-one peer support\, and small group mentorship\, we will honor the lineages that we’ve inherited\, lay down the inheritances which no longer serve\, and hold space for the grief—and relief—of letting go. \n\n\n\nCollectively\, we are building a community of practice rooted in each of our own lineages of blood\, land\, and path\, encouraging and supporting each other in the work of cultural renewal and repair. It is through shared study\, community witness\, and group accountability that we do our work as white\, white-passing\, and white-assimilated folks to build anti-racist culture rooted in connection with our ancestors and future descendants (both human and more-than-human). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“From new moon to new moon\, the Re-Calling Our Ancestors Monthlong unfolds in a spiraling practice full of curiosity and care. Within this holistic framework\, I experienced deep compassion for my ancestors—in all their beautiful\, messy humanity—and for myself.” \n\n\n\n– Amie Adams\, ROA ‘26 Alum \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nParticipants are encouraged to participate individually or with a working partner or group. SUMMARY:Wild Wanders Through The Seasons: Fall
DESCRIPTION:Ceremonially Marking the Cycles & Seasons of Our Lives  \n\n\n\nNov 1st\, Feb 7th\, May 2nd\, August 1st \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFall Wander\, November 1st\, 2026 @ 9 AM\n\n\n\nAll wanders will take place in the Methow Valley watershed\, exact location shared upon registration. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nIn the spirit of attuning ourselves to the seasons of both our valley and our lives\, we invite you to join one or more of a series of communally-held solo wanders.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThese seasonal\, ceremonial walks offer solo journeys with community support to intentionally orient and mark the cycles of our season ahead\, perhaps as preparation or integration for a bigger life transition\, to mark a particular moment\, or as a practice of ongoing renewal.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWe will begin each Wild Wander as a small circle of community\, to check-in\, orient\, clarify intentions\, and finalize preparations for a safe journey alone. Greeting the sunrise\, sunset\, or perhaps the coming dark of night\, you will cross a threshold (a small circle of stones\, a line in the sand\, or the space between two trees) to mark the beginning and ending of your walk. You will sit or wander with a question\, intention\, or prayer while fasting from the common comforts of food\, shelter\, and human company as sacrifices to sanctify this meaningful time. Upon your return\, we will welcome you back\, share a simple meal\, and hear your stories from the Wild Wander before you return home.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSimple. Grounded. And much needed in these times.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWHAT: A ceremonial solo time in the wilds with your own intentions\, questions\, and prayers\, held and witnessed in community. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWHERE: Locations are TBD each season\, depending on current conditions; they will always be in the Methow Valley watershed. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWHEN: Sundays for up to 8 hours of the day\, sometimes into the night\, depending on the season. These Wild Wanders are scheduled for Nov 1st\, 2026\, Feb 7th\, 2027\, May 2nd\, 2027 and August 1st\, 2027. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nCOST: There is no cost to participate in these wild wanders\, and we welcome your support! You can make a gift here – please select ‘Rites and Responsibilities’ in the drop down menu when gifting. Contributions from our community make it possible for Rites and Responsibilities to make events like this possible free of charge. Right now\, we are raising $30K to cover our expenses for 2026\, which include website improvements\, outreach efforts\, basic office infrastructure\, and a modest stipend for Scott & Darcy. Here is more information on our way with money. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER HERE\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nQuestions? SUMMARY:Wild Wanders Through the Seasons: Winter
DESCRIPTION:Ceremonially Marking the Cycles & Seasons of Our Lives \n\n\n\nFeb 7th\, May 2nd\, August 1st\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWinter Wander\, February 7th\, 2026 @ 9 AM\n\n\n\nAll wanders will take place in the Methow Valley watershed\, exact location shared upon registration. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn the spirit of attuning ourselves to the seasons of both our valley and our lives\, we invite you to join one or more of a series of communally-held solo wanders. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe will begin each Wild Wander as a small circle of community\, to check-in\, orient\, clarify intentions\, and finalize preparations for a safe journey alone. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSimple. Grounded. And much needed in these times. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWHAT: A ceremonial solo time in the wilds with your own intentions\, questions\, and prayers\, held and witnessed in community. These Wild Wanders are scheduled for Feb 7th\, 2027\, May 2nd\, 2027 and August 1st\, 2027. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER HERE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nQuestions?
